About Me (And My Startup Life)

I’m Erin Millar. I’m a journalist-entrepreneur and the CEO of Indiegraf, a technology company helping independent local newsrooms thrive across North America. I’m also a mom to 8-year-old twins, Oscar and Louise — and after years of chasing it, I’ve finally accepted that the pursuit of “balance” is a myth and the idea of “having it all” was never the point.

Her Startup Life is my space to share what it really takes to lead a mission-driven startup — without losing yourself in the process. Since founding the local news startup The Discourse in 2014, I’ve been part of launching more than a dozen new organizations: a tech startup, multiple community media platforms, an industry association, a charity, even a $500 million fund — all with the same goal in mind: building a more equitable and sustainable news ecosystem that strengthens democracy.

At Indiegraf, we’re working to make it easier for anyone to become a journalist-entrepreneur so that every community can have access to quality local news. But as I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way), it takes a lot more than a good idea and funding to make life as an entrepreneur work.

Her Startup Life is about that messy intersection where building a company meets being a real human — startup life, parent life, real life.
